Hand and upper limb pathologies can be isolated or a part of a set of disorders in children with other complex diseases. Both require a unique therapeutic approach for children.
These pathologies are sometimes congenital and sometimes develop over time or caused during the child’s growth.
Some pathologies are suited for conservative treatment (occupational therapy, physiotherapy, orthothics/splints/prosthetics) and somepathologies require surgery.
Making a decision on the optimal treatment is complex when it is an upper limb and hand, since it is often difficult to achieve a functional improvement in additional to a cosmetic change. These discussions are carried out as part of this consultation clinic.
After surgery
After upper limb surgery, it is sometimes necessary to start conservative treatment on an inpatient basis in the rehabilitation department, at least until the pain has subsided, and getting set up at home with the assistive equipment required for the recovery period. According to the instructions given by the surgeon, treatment can be given on an outpatient basis. It is very important to schedule orthotics/splints fittings after surgical intervention at the time determined by the surgeon.
We recommend scheduling a preparatory appointment several weeks before the operation so we can get to know you and the child, in order to better prepare for the anticipated rehabilitation period and plan a customized rehabilitation program for you in advance.
