The Legacy Heritage Fund Independent Living Neighborhood for Ventilator-Dependent Young Adults

is accomodation for ventilator-dependent young adults who are suffering from muscular dystrophy or spinal injuries and who are mobile using electric wheelchairs.

The Independent Living Neighborhood provides a domestic framework for these young adults (aged 18 – 40 ) who are dependent on ventilators. This facility allows the residents to achieve a balance between independent living and their need for constant medical supervision. A skilled team of therapists is available at all times.

The Neighborhood, designed by the architects and other professionals in cooperation with the young adults, includes: 

• Residential units
• Private rooms
• Residents’ club room
• Well-tended garden.

The residential units include:

• Sleeping quarters
• Guest lounge
• Sun balcony
• Well-equipped kitchen
• En-suite washroom and shower
• Air conditioning and heating

The guiding principles are:

• Independence - to lead as independent a lifestyle as possible.
• Privacy - a private, aesthetically designed room for each resident -within a domestic environment.
• Medical care - monitoring and supervision which allows both independence and quality of life.
• Cooperation – residents of the Neighborhood, in conjunction with the Alyn Management make decisions relating to their lifestyle within this facility.
